Beyond Tired: The Quiet Truth Behind Burnout
We’ve all heard a lot about burnout. But here’s something I keep coming back to: there’s a difference between being tired and being burned out.
Fatigue can be solved with rest: a nap, a break, a reset.
Burnout is deeper. It’s the kind of exhaustion where even rest doesn’t restore you. Where motivation disappears. Where everything starts to feel pointless or heavy.
And it’s not just about how much you’re doing. In fact, sometimes doing a lot is actually energizing if the conditions are right.
Burnout often comes from what’s missing:
A sense of reward: You give so much, but get little back, whether it’s recognition, growth, financial compensation, or meaning.
A feeling of autonomy or control: Life feels like it's happening to you. You don’t have a say. You’re just reacting, not choosing.
Alignment: You’re doing things that don’t match your values, or the way you want to live.
We rarely burn out just from working hard. We burn out from working hard in systems, relationships, or rhythms that drain us.
So if you're feeling more than just tired, ask yourself:
What’s draining me that didn’t used to? Or
Where do I feel most alive—and how can I lean more into that?
What parts of these ideas feel true for you right now? I’d love to hear.
