Which Leadership Hat Are You Forgetting to Wear?

Leadership isn’t a single act. It’s a wardrobe.

Sure, it includes setting vision, shaping strategy, and defining goals. But some of the most impactful leadership happens in the day-to-day interactions with your team. That’s where real influence lives; not in lofty plans, but in how you show up.

Most of us have a “go-to” leadership style. We default to what's familiar. Maybe we’re the fixer, the teacher, the sounding board. But great leadership means asking a different set of questions:

What does this moment actually call for?

What outcome is needed?

Am I wearing the right leadership hat?

Adaptable Leaders Succeed

Strong leaders don’t stick to just one role or skillset. They flex. They shift between roles as needed: Manager, Mentor, Trainer, Feedback Giver. And perhaps the most underused, most powerful hat of all: the Coach.

The Five Key Leadership Hats

Each hat has its own superpower. The manager focuses on tasks. The mentor shares wisdom from their experience. The trainer teaches skills. The feedback giver course-corrects.

And the coach? The coach helps people grow.

Expand Your Leadership Skillset

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about cultivating confident, thoughtful decision-makers, especially in a chaotic, complex, and changing world.

That means building your coaching skills. Here's how to start:

🎩 Notice which hat you instinctively reach for.

🔄 Practice switching hats intentionally.

🗣  Be transparent. “I’m putting on my coaching hat on now."

Ask more. Tell less. Help others think critically, act independently, and gain confidence.

You don't need to abandon your strengths; just expand them.

Managing, mentoring, and training get things done. Coaching grows the people who get things done.

That is the heart of sustainable, people-centered leadership.

Next time a team member brings you a problem, pause before solving. Try asking:

“What have you already tried?"

"What would success look like?"

"What might get in the way?”

You’ll be surprised how much potential is ready to emerge.

Which hat feels most natural to you? Which one could you try on this week?

I always love hearing from you.
